About Us

WELCOME TO NEW CITY AIKIDO

Shodokan/Tomiki Aikido is an effective method of self-defense against an unprovoked attack.  Aikido, “the way of harmonious action,” differs from other martial forms in that it has at its core a foundation of non-violence.  In developing skill it is important that the implementation of various techniques does not result in serious injury to the attacker, either in the dojo or the street.  In the classes, we begin by working on one of the most important skills in any fighting situation-getting out of the way of an attack.  As the class progresses,  students develop the skills necessary to use an attacker’s commitment as an opportunity to gain physical control over them.

We are affiliated with the Japan Aikido Association, which has members in Asia, Australia, Europe and North and South America.  Training is available through the black belt level, and the student who trains through this level will be awarded a black belt by the Japan Aikido Association.   We,  volunteer teachers at the YMCA,  believe that aikido provides us with the physical training, mental stimulation , and a useful mindset for dealing with everyday challenges.

Some of  our students are considering investing the considerable time and effort required to earn a black belt, while others are only mildly curious about the martial arts, and may already know that they will be leaving after the seven week introduction.  No matter what their, or your,  plans are for the future, we welcome  all students, and we look forward to training with you.
